Baby-Boomer-Life: Antioxidants for Health, Power, and Strength, Part 2

You can listen to my mp3 or read my post.

In a previous Baby Boomer Life article on health, I talked about meeting Jimmy Smith, the former butcher turned millionaire. Jimmy got my attention with his testimony about antioxidants and his blazing good health and energy. I couldn’t help but notice the bounce in his 79 year old strut, the gleam in his eyes, and the vibrant tone and texture of his skin.

This is a wake up call Boomers!  Jimmy Smith is more than twenty-YES TWENTY!-years older than most of us and the man is the picture of health and fitness.  NO FAT! Read on friends because this can be YOU!

I promise you that you too would have been awestruck at the overall vibrantly healthy power of Jimmy’s amazing presence. Surely being a millionaire doesn’t hurt, but Jimmy Smith’s great energy comes from deep inside at the cellular level. I’m no doctor, not even close, but I’m no dummy either. I’ve been around a lot of people in their seventies and eighties and Jimmy is exceptional. Remember, I told you he was forced to retire due to health issues in his late fifties? Yep, that Jimmy Smith. Baby Boomers take heed! We have a lot of “livin’ up to” if we intend to keep up with the likes of Jimmy Smith. He’s become one of Baby Boomer Life’s men to watch.

So, needless to say, I bought The Antioxidant Miracle and started reading about the antioxidant network. There are five chemical players in the antioxidant network and they strengthen us by working together as they protect us from disease and keep us young.

The network consists of these five antioxidants from what scientists know at this time; they are Vitamins C and E, glutathione, CoenzymeQ10 (CoQ10), and lipoic acid. Although the last three are produced by the body, we have to supplement them once we hit Boomer age because the levels steadily decline as we age. Of course you know vitamins C and E have to come from food and food based quality supplementation because our bodies don’t make them.

The Packer Lab, founded by Dr. Lester Packer at University of California at Berkeley, discovered the network antioxidants and they way they work together to enhance the power of one another. Dr. Packer says that “The antioxidant network is a shield that protects the body from the forces that age us before our time and rob years from our lives.” In fact, network antioxidants boost the body’s ability to fight diseases and while keeping us healthy they also slow down the aging process.

Not only that but network antioxidants actually reverse signs of aging whenever you start to use them, according to the research. We’ve all heard of free radicals, right? Well, antioxidants can make the difference between life and death so we can’t even consider being without them after 40. I wish I had understood the role of antioxidants ten or fifteen years ago, but I can’t change the past only the present.

I don’t know about you but I am all over this like white on rice (except I only eat short grain organic brown rice when I eat rice at all). I have been reading and re-reading Dr. Packer’s words because the doc says he is “not just adding years to our lives but life to our years” with this information and application.

Yes, I want to live long and I want to live strong! How about you?

Did you know that vitamin C protects against cataracts and that it is abundant in red peppers, broccoli, cranberries, tomatoes and citrus fruits- to name a few? I love an organic Valencia Orange. You know Vitamin C is the “hub” of the network!

When Dr. Packer talks about the role of lipoic acid in protecting us against liver and heart disease, diabetes and cancer, I get so excited it’s all I can do to sit here and type!! I am not kidding either. Don’t you think I went right onto the Isagenix website and ordered antioxidants and am taking them everyday now? You know I am! I hope you will too. Or go to your most trusted health food store and get the best product you can find that contains all the network antioxidants. A chiropractor friend of mine swears by the Standard Process brand which you have to get from a health professional, and I trust her too, so maybe you want to try that one.

Personally, I like the Isagenix brand because I trust the quality of the product and I feel good recommending it as a brand that I use. You must choose for yourselves. But please, get The Antioxidant Miracle and read it ASAP! Share it with a friend, a family member, a club or group that you belong to. Watch the changes in yourself and your friends or spouse as they get the benefits of the antioxidant network working in their bodies.

I’d love to hear from you down the road about this because I didn’t know Jimmy Smith when he was forced to retire due to health reasons but you know what? I know him now!! If our 79 year old buddy Jimmy is any indication of the power of antioxidants, and he swears he is, then I will be taking them for the rest of my life!

I can go on and on quoting and paraphrasing the words and research of Dr. Packer, the worlds foremost antioxidant research scientist, who has dedicated his life since 1949 to researching health at the cellular level and the role of antioxidants in the body. Instead I am going to insist that if you have any desire to be current with true information about what you CAN do to get your health back, you will go spend a couple of bucks and an hour of your time and read the “abridged edition” at the very least.

Along with daily walking and some kind of strength training like push ups, one of my other favorites is the Total Gym, a product that both my man and I swear by for strength training. I find that I tone very quickly with our favorite at home equipment called the Total Gym and it is not hard on my body and my joints. Another product I swear by is the Health Bounce Mini Trampoline. I can’t stress enough how wonderful the mini trampoline is for cleaning the cells and oxygenating the body. There has been a lot of research done on “bouncing” and it really is good for us Boomers and easy on the joints but a very effective and fun workout.

When I am traveling I keep it basic and do push-ups for upper body, and forward and reverse lunges for lower body as well as walking or swimming if it is an option. Of course, give me a beach and I can walk for an hour in the early morning and feel fabulously fit all day. I get my vitamin D in that way too.

Aren’t we blessed to be born in a time when there is so much information and so many options? Which reminds me my dear Baby Boomer Life blog readers, let’s be aware of certain special interest groups who would limit these options and even possibly take them away from us. It is very important to protect our health freedom rights. We are intelligent people who have the ability to be responsible for our own health and fitness-yes?. As an avid reader and diligent practitioner of self health awareness, I like my options open. Just a little heads up there.

In Part 3 of this article we will continue our discussion on Power, Strength and Health.

Now remember, today is the day to get up off your duff and DO SOMETHING!! :-)
